This day have I perfected for you your religion, and completed My favour upon you, and chosen for you Islam as your religion.
You may have recited this verse.
But do you know The Great News that led to this revelation?
According to Tabari, Suyuti, Ibne Asakir, and several other Sunni tafsirs
  • Ibne Marduya Isfahani
  • Abu Nuaim Isfahani
  • Hakeem Haskani โ€” Shawahidut Tanzil
  • Khwarizmi โ€” Al-Manaqib
โ€” this verse was revealed following the Prophet's (s.a.w.w.) sermon at Ghadeer Khum, in which he declared:

Authenticity
How authentic do you consider this hadith?
Authenticity

There are hadiths that are authentic, and then there are hadiths that are Mutawatir. This hadith belongs to the latter category.

This hadith has been graded as Mutawatir by...
Tirmizi (d. 279 A.H.)Ibne Abde Barr (d. 463 A.H.)Ghazzali (d. 505 A.H.)Ibne Hajar Asqalani (d. 852 A.H.)Jalaluddin Suyuti (d. 911 A.H.)
What does Mutawatir mean?
A hadith reaches the grade of Mutawatir when it is narrated by so many independent witnesses, across so many generations, that fabrication becomes a rational impossibility. It is the highest grade in Islamic hadith science โ€” above Sahih, above Hassan. A Mutawatir hadith carries the same certainty as direct witnessed knowledge.

Authenticity

Perhaps you are not acquainted with this hadith, its narrators and its transmitters โ€” here is what the historical record shows.

110Named Companions
84Tabi'een Narrators
360Scholars across Islamic history
When a hadith is narrated independently by 110 Companions of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.) โ€” people of different backgrounds, different allegiances, and different regions โ€” the possibility of fabrication does not merely diminish. It becomes rationally impossible.
Among the 110 companions who narrated this hadith
Abu HurairaJabir bin AbdullahAbdullah bin AbbasUmar bin KhattabUthman bin AffanAyeshaFatima al-ZahraSalman al-FarsiAbu Zar GhiffariAmr bin AasZubair bin AwwamSaad bin Abi Waqqas
This is precisely why the scholars of hadith did not merely grade this narration as authentic โ€” they placed it in the highest category of all: Mutawatir.

"This tradition is authentic and famous and except for a prejudiced person, no one will argue about its authenticity."
The Word Mawla
What do you think the word ู…ูŽูˆู’ู„ูŽู‰ (Mawla) means in this declaration?
The Word Mawla

Arabic Linguistic Principle
Preceding context determines meaning
In Arabic, when a word carries multiple possible meanings, the speech immediately preceding its use is the primary evidence for which meaning is intended. This is a recognised principle in Arabic rhetoric and Quranic exegesis.

Look at what the Prophet said immediately before raising Ali's hand:

"Do I not have more authority (awla) over you than you have over yourselves?"

The crowd confirmed: "Yes." He then said: "Of whomsoever I am the Mawla, Ali is his Mawla."

The Prophet himself linked the declaration to the concept of awla โ€” one who has greater authority over a person than that person has over themselves.By the rules of Arabic context, Mawla here inherits the meaning of awla: authority, not mere friendship.
The Command to Announce
Verse 5:67
Allah commanded the Prophet (s.a.w.w.): "O Apostle! deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message."

The following Sunni exegetes record this verse as revealed at Ghadeer Khum, commanding the Prophet to announce the Mastership of Ali:

Would Allah command the Prophet so urgently โ€” warning that silence would mean his entire message was undelivered โ€” merely for an announcement of friendship?
The Scale of the Occasion
Would this occasion be arranged to announce friendship?
The Prophet halted over 100,000 pilgrims in the midday heat of a desert, had a pulpit constructed from camel saddles, and delivered a full sermon. The companions already knew Ali was beloved. The occasion itself demands a declaration of far greater significance.
The Verse of Perfection
Sunni exegetes connect it to this moment
Immediately after the declaration, verse 5:3 was revealed: "This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favour on you."

It would need more than just a declaration of friendship for the final message from Allah to be declared perfected and complete.
Scope of Authority
If Mawla here means 'one with authority,' what kind of authority was being declared?
Scope of Authority

Some Muslims do believe that this implied merely spiritual authority and not political leadership โ€” but the Prophet (s.a.w.w.) himself held no such division in his authority.

The Prophetic Model
No division between religious and political authority
The Prophet was simultaneously the religious and political leader of the Muslim community. There was no office of "spiritual guide" separate from the head of the community. To say Ali was appointed as spiritual successor only is to invent a division that had no precedent or definition in the prophetic model.
Those Who Were Present
The congratulatory words of Abu Bakr and Umar
Immediately after the declaration, Abu Bakr and Umar were among the first to congratulate Ali. Their words:

"Congratulations, O son of Abu Talib โ€” you have become the master (Mawla) of every believing man and woman."This is not the language of "you have become our spiritual guide." It is the language of universal authority over the entire community of believers.

The Prophet's Own Words
The finality of this occasion
Before making the declaration, the Prophet (s.a.w.w.) addressed the gathering:

"I will be summoned very soon and I will have to harken to the call."A leader who knows he is about to depart would use his final gathering of 100,000 followers to announce not just a spiritual guide, but a successor in the fullest sense โ€” a Mawla in every dimension that he himself was Mawla.

The Statement of Ibne Abbas
Mastership obligatory on everyone
Ibne Abbas said:

"By God, Mastership (Wilayat) of Ali became obligatory on everyone."Obligatory on everyone โ€” not merely in matters of religious knowledge.

Scope of Authority

Acknowledging rank requires no divine command, no halting of 100,000 pilgrims, and no revelation of the verse of perfection. What happened at Ghadeer was of a different order entirely.

The Language of the Declaration
Transfer, not praise
When the Prophet wished to praise Ali's rank or virtue, he used direct language elsewhere โ€” "you are to me as Harun was to Moosa." At Ghadeer, the structure is entirely different: "Of whomsoever I am the Mawla, Ali is his Mawla."This is the language of role transfer โ€” a formal appointment structure, not a praise statement.
The Gesture
A formal presentation before 100,000 witnesses
The Prophet had Ali stand beside him and physically raised his hand before the entire gathering. This is a gesture of formal presentation. Praise does not require this before 100,000 witnesses.
Two Verses, One Occasion
The Quranic framing of Ghadeer
The declaration at Ghadeer is bracketed by two Quranic verses. Before it, Allah commanded in 5:67: "deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message." After it, 5:3 was revealed: "This day have I perfected for you your religion."A divine command before. The completion of religion after. With such a lofty context and the unprecedented scale of the audience, the entire event warrants an announcement much more noteworthy than just a declaration of rank.

Your Conclusion
Now ask yourself, are both the Prophet Muhammad and Ali your Mawla?
Your Chain of Analysis
The Prophet (s.a.w.w.) did not leave any ambiguity. He gave an integrated, clear criterion: whoever accepts the Prophet as their Mawla must, by the Prophet's own words, accept Ali as their Mawla too. To reject either one as Mawla is to reject both of them.
Your Chain of Analysis
Honest enquiry is a very sincere approach. The sources are there โ€” the Musnad of Ahmad, the Mustadrak of Hakim, the Khasais of Nasai, and the scholars who graded this Mutawatir across Islamic history. May Allah grant you clarity and guide you to the truth of His Prophet's words.
Your Chain of Analysis
โœฆ
You have understood what so many have overlooked โ€” the significance of the exact event after which Allah declared the religion to be perfected and complete.
May Allah strengthen this understanding and may the love of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.) and Mawla Ali (a.s.) continue to guide you.
